When Nostalgia Meets Cool: How to Have a Field Day on the Golf Course

At a time when apparel brands – both in golf and outside of it – are trying to push the limits of what makes you look and feel cool, Field Day is operating under its own set of rules. By leaning into nostalgia and timelessness paired with functionality, this midwest-based brand wants you to look good now, and when you look back on now as the years go by.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how the brand was born, and what owner/designer Patrick Keegan wants Field Day to mean for golf and golfers moving forward.

Planting the Field Seeds

After growing up around the golf business and learning as much as he could from his dad, a golf shop owner/operator at the old school Morris Country Club not far from Chicago, Patrick Keegan began pursuing his dream of owning a golf apparel company. After turning down a golf scholarship in lieu of attending The Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago, he took his Fashion Design degree to the real world where he hit the fairway running in New York City.

Keegan designed golf apparel for Ralph Lauren and then followed his boss, Charlie Schaefer, as Schaefer launched Greyson Clothiers with Keegan as the company’s first employee. From there he worked at brands like Linksoul, Seamus Golf and others.

Dawn of a New (Field) Day

But Keeagn never lost track of his roots and eventually took his years of experience in golf apparel design and combined it with everything that made him fall in love with the game back at Morris Country Club, and created his own brand in his own backyard: Field Day Sporting Co.

“My vision is to build a product that, looking back at photos years in the future, we will be proud of the decisions we made,” Keegan told FairwayStyles via email. “Looking back at black and white photos of the best dressed men in history, I don’t think they’d scratch their heads at the product they wore. They’d probably still be wearing much of it.”

The brand now comes complete with a brick and mortar general store in Keegan’s hometown with a bar and a barbershop, which is also the homebase for Field Day Sporting Co.'s design team. And it was hometown support early for the family owned and self-funded Field Day that helped build a following, which has since paved the way for more national exposure and new product lines.

Take to the Field Day

When it comes to the latest line of golf apparel from Field Day, the focus for Keegan was less on reinventing the wheel and more on showing an appreciation for yesteryear.

“We don’t want this collection to be a departure to the fit and feel of what you’re already wearing on course,” he said. “Field Day is designed with the attitude and class of the past, but the innovation and functionality of the future.“

And as is the case with the most popular golf apparel lately, Field Day is looking to style you beyond just the golf course, and doing it with clothes – including polos, pants and outerwear – that will stand the test of time both literally and figuratively.

“We are building product with the golfer in mind, but not designing product specific to it,” Keegan said. “We are building product that are aimed at the traditionalist and purist-minded customer, but with modern functionality.”
