Interview with FootJoy Senior Product Manager Keith Duffy

Feb 15, 2020

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Senior Product Manager for FootJoy, Keith Duffy, at this year’s PGA show. Read along as Keith shares some insight on what sets FootJoy apart as the #1 Shoe in Golf, and keeping relevant with golf fashion trends.

Keith Duffy-FJ Senior Product Manager

FairwayStyles: Describe what your role is with FootJoy.

Keith Duffy: Senior Product Manager - My name is Keith Duffy. I am responsible for the Global Footwear Line plan, working with international market managers to define the range and scope for specific seasons while managing the product from concept to consumer.

FS: How would you describe the brand of FootJoy?

KD: FJ is a consumer focused brand that is passionate about bringing great footwear product solutions that exceed expectations for golfers at every level of the game.

FS: What do you feel sets FootJoy apart from other brands out there?

KD: We have been in the footwear business since 1857 and we have a sole focus on golf. We have been the #1 shoe on the PGA Tour since 1945 and continue to lead the footwear space in golf specific innovation.

FS: What trends are you seeing in the industry right now? Are there any specific materials, fabrics, or performance features?

KD: Casual is ok too! We are seeing some golfers prefer and place a higher preference on comfort that one would typically expect from non-golf footwear. Styling preferences have followed the comfort trend in some instances to be a bit more relaxed.

FS: Are you seeing any specific fabric trends or blends of fabrics more so now versus in years past?

KD: We are seeing more mesh and engineered mesh products than in recent history.

FS: During the design process, what's the percentage you consider when players are on the course versus off the course?

KD: With the shift toward casual comfort, we are more focused on providing more versatile footwear options that a golfer could wear to the course and to meet their spouse for dinner after the round.

FS: Where do you see footwear design going over the next five years?

KD: There is no crystal ball to know exactly know where the consumer will go, but our team does a great job at following trends and doing advanced trend research to get ahead of it where we can.

FS: What are some of the challenges in designing shoes for men versus women?

KD: The process is the same as well as the effort and time spent. FJ is focused on being the total solution in golf footwear for men and women of all levels and playing ability.

FS: How has FootJoy evolved as a brand?

KD: We're closer to the consumer than ever before, but still focused on what has made us the industry leader in golf footwear. Fit, Comfort, Performance and Quality are at the top of our mind in the design and development of any product. That will never change. We don't just offer saddle shoes and wing tips either. We offer a wide array of contemporary and athletic styles in addition to our more classic shoe categories. We like to think we have something to offer for every golf consumer.
