Why J. Lindeberg Was the Perfect Choice For USA Golf in Paris

It’s official, the 2024 United States Olympic Men's Golf roster has been finalized with Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark. And while there are plenty of opinions being tossed around regarding who should have made the team and who shouldn’t have, one thing most people have been in agreement on is that the team’s J. Lindeberg uniforms this year are complete and total fire.

After two straight summer games with the U.S. golfers wearing Adidas, it’s J. Lindeberg’s turn to make its mark on this global sporting event and they seem to be passing with flying colors. Well, three colors in particular.

The brand’s Chief Creative Officer, Neil Lewty, spoke with FairwayStyles via email to discuss what went into the design – especially with so much pressure! – and how they struck just the right balance for Paris.

Pride and Function

A solid combination of looks and functionality in golf apparel has become the standard. But when the look needs to represent a country, and the function is for world-class athletes on the biggest stage, that’s what Lewty described as a “unique set of pressures,” but also an “incredible opportunity” for the brand.

“Striking a balance between aesthetics and performance has always been our focus since J.Lindeberg was founded in 1996, infusing style into the world of golf,” Lewty said. “For these uniforms, our priority was to ensure that the athletes felt comfortable and confident, knowing that their look would support their performance.”

With the mission of blending American pride with high-performance functionality, the design team ultimately looked inward and leaned on what the brand does best.

“The collection embodies the spirit of American excellence, innovation and competitive spirit, reflecting values we also hold at J.Lindeberg,” Lewty said. “We approached this project with great attention to detail, ensuring that every piece not only met our high standards but also honored the athletes and the country they represent.

But with all that being said, the brand wasn’t afraid to have a little fun either. Pieces like the varsity jacket and the Claude Cardigan are fun and definitely unexpected when you’re thinking of the Olympics. Lewty said they wanted to infuse a sense of fun and individuality and celebrate the unique personalities of the athletes.

“The letterman jacket and cardigan are nods to classic American styles, reimagined with a modern twist,” He said. “These pieces add a playful yet sophisticated element to the collection, allowing athletes to express their personal style while maintaining a unified team look.”

Learning From the Past, and the Future

In preparing the uniforms for Paris, the J. Lindeberg team looked back on previous games to pull what they consider to be valuable insights from those uniforms, made by Adidas for both 2016 in Rio and 2020 in Tokyo. Those findings went into J. Lindeberg’s innovations for this opportunity.

“We learned the importance of marrying tradition with modernity and the critical need for fabrics that offer both flexibility and durability. It helped us refine our approach, ensuring our collection is both contemporary and timeless,” Lewty said.

And sure, learning from the past is smart and all, but learning from the future is really where it’s at. And by that we mean taking into account which players had the best chance to make the team and gearing the designs toward their needs. And sure enough, the J. Lindeberg folks absolutely did that too.

“We collaborate with some of the world’s best athletes so we have a good understanding of their preferences and requirements,” Lewty said. “This input is always crucial in designing uniforms that not only fit well but also enhance performance, allowing each athlete to focus on their game with confidence.”

The J.Lindeberg Team USA collection doesn’t just bring the style and function to garments, it includes things like towels, headcovers, duffle bags, backpacks, belts, shoes and socks, plus a variety of hats, all perfectly on-theme and on-point.

And as it turns out, Lewty said that players have been digging the uniforms, which are giving them feelings of both “pride and confidence.” What more can you ask for? Well, how about a gold medal?!
